It’s never easy to improve on greatness. After five years and more than $1 billion dollars in development, in 2009 Porsche unveiled the Panamera—the first four-door sports car from the creators of the iconic 911 Carrera. Fast-forward three years and the Panamera, offering first-class amenities with Porsche’s signature autobahn-bred performance, has amassed a loyal following in Atlanta. Now, Porsche ups the ante with an exclusive new model, the Panamera Platinum Edition.
So, what makes the Platinum Edition even more rarefied than the original? For starters it includes as standard a variety of features that would normally be optional. Among the list of extras are 19-inch Panamera Turbo alloy wheels, heated front and rear seats, a Bose 585-watt premium sound system and bi-xenon headlights that follow the curves of the road, vastly improving nighttime visibility on those dark Georgia backroads.
Inside, the Platinum Edition sports a two-tone color scheme that sees the upper dashboard trimmed in black with the seats and lower console lined in sumptuous luxor beige. Aluminum scuff plates on the doors, inscribed with “Platinum Edition,” remind owners of the Panamera’s exclusivity, while Porsche crests on the headrests recall the brand’s Bavarian racing roots.
The muscle behind the beauty is a fuel-efficient 3.6-liter V6 engine. The V6 churns out 300 horsepower, which, combined with a seven-speed dual-clutch PDK automatic transmission, launches the car from 0 to 60 mph in just 5.8 seconds. The PDK transmission (no relation to the private jet airport) is the best automatic in the industry, firing off quick shifts that always seem to find the right gear. Drivers can also shift it manually, using the silver F1-racecar-style paddles on the steering wheel. With a fuel economy rating of 27 mpg on the highway, the Panamera’s sporty character doesn’t hurt you at the pump.
Weighing in at just 3,880 pounds, the Platinum Edition Panamera drives like a car half its size. Curves become an invitation to explore its gravitational limits, while highway on-ramps implore drivers to open up the throttle and enjoy the exhaust note. Everything from the key, which was designed to mimic the shape of its exterior, to its carefully sculpted center console, reveals the lengths Porsche has gone to create this truly remarkable four-door sports car.
It’s a sublime effort for Porsche’s first shot at a sedan. Look for the 2013 Panamera Platinum Edition in Georgia dealers this January.
