Neck and Neck

Tie the Knot, the dapper line of bow ties benefiting marriage equality, extends its Beverly Hills pop-up shop until the end of the month—just in time for Valentine’s Day.

When Tie the Knot co-founders (and newlyweds) Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Justin Mikita agreed to display their colorful collection of men’s neckwear at Beverly Center pop-up The Tie Bar over the holidays, they had no idea the store would elicit such enthusiasm. “The whole thing was an exciting experiment for us,” says Ferguson, who stars as Mitchell Pritchett on the Golden Globe- and Emmy Award-winning show Modern Family. “But the response has been greater than we expected.” Now, the couple—who have already raised more than $100,000 from sales of their limited-edition bow ties to support civil rights organizations for marriage equality—are extending their brick-and-mortar run. “We’ll be revealing our spring collection, which is inspired by the runways: loud and bold,” Ferguson says. “But there are some masculine prints too. And a lot of chevron.” The couple has also tapped fashion expert Tim Gunn for a designer collaboration, which will be available in the pop-up shop this month. “We love him! And his bow tie is so chic,” says Ferguson, who hinted he might pair Gunn’s exclusive creation with a Band of Outsiders tux during awards season. But, according to Ferguson, you needn’t save the neckwear for special occasions only. “I’m embracing the bow tie as a casual accessory that can be fun,” Ferguson says. “I wear them under sweaters, a puffy vest or even paired with a patterned, checkered shirt.” For Valentine’s Day, why not sport one to really impress your date? “I always think it’s a bit on the nose to wear red or pink on Feb. 14,” Ferguson says. “So I’d go with something more classic, like a smart brown or blue.” Spoken like a true gentleman.
