Amsale Says...

In town for the opening of the new Belle Vie Bridal Couture salon on Oak Street, celeb-beloved dress designer Amsale tells us about her spring 2013 collection—and why she thinks Chicago is a cool place to visit.

What do you think of Belle Vie’s new space? It’s very clean and very chic, yet in a warm way. It’s feminine and modern at the same time—just the right combination. How would you describe your new collection? Retro but current. These gowns are modern in the sense that they are relevant, but also classy and timeless. I never design to be trendy. A wedding goes beyond the one day. The dress is in all your pictures. I think about that when I’m designing—a bride showing her wedding album to her children and grandchildren. Do you have a style icon? Audrey Hepburn. She never over-accessorized. It was always the right cardigan, the right pencil dress, the right ballet flat, the right earring... She was so boyish and beautiful. You’re only in town for 24 hours. What’s your perfect day in Chicago? Chicago is a lot like New York, only edited. The shopping’s better and the food is amazing. If I had more free time, I’d spend it walking the art galleries in River North. You have a really beautiful city.
