Yasel & Alexander

A high-flying couple pulls off an elegant affair and ends up with a special bonus—despite a presidential interruption.
Two years after meeting Alexander Rosado, a systems engineer, at the Miami Air Route Traffic Control Center, Yasel Santana woke up one morning with a ring on her finger. “He had placed the ring on my finger while I was asleep,” the air traffic controller and commercial pilot said of her early-morning proposal.
As so many loved ones were coming in from out of town, the couple opted for a four-day, destination wedding-style fete that started off with Wednesday bachelor/bachelorette parties that included scooter rentals to Lincoln Road and South Beach. As a special surprise, the bride-to-be received an early wedding present from Alexander: a Maltese puppy she named Thor. The newest member of their family made his first appearance at the Thursday rehearsal dinner at Brickell’s Dolores But You Can Call Me Lolita, where guests enjoyed a two-course meal of chicken, Kobe beef and toasts of wine.
The following afternoon, the couple exchanged vows in front of the grand organ at the First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables. The bride wore a lavish Gabriella Arango Couture gown with hand-pleated rosettes, paired with a long, matching veil and a bouquet of garden roses inspired by the wedding in Sex and the City. “I’m a fashionista, so you can imagine growing up watching Carrie on SATC was a huge influence on my style,” says the bride. “I just love the way the flowers looked, freshly picked from a garden.” The wedding party complemented the look with rose-colored dresses by Alfred Angelo and tuxes by Calvin Klein, while the groom wore Vera Wang.
However, the day didn’t finish without a hitch. As the couple made it to their waiting Rolls-Royce post-ceremony, their driver let them know of a small kink in their plans. “The roads were blocked because President Obama was at the Biltmore Hotel,” recalls the bride. “What would’ve been a three- to five-minute drive from the carefully chosen church to the reception turned into a 45-minute drive.”
Forgoing their planned photo shoot, the photographer saved the day by inviting the couple to be the featured models for a photo workshop she was hosting the following weekend at the historic Curtiss Mansion—which worked perfectly, as the couple had already planned to delay their European honeymoon until the following year.
“I was glad we were able to participate in the workshop to get more pictures of us in our wedding attire. The Curtiss Mansion is a gorgeous venue, and I just love the contrast between my dress and the color of the mansion,” she says.
One traffic jam later, the couple and their 100 guests finally made their way to the Coral Gables Country Club. After cocktail hour, a seated dinner was held under the glistening chandeliers of the Atrium Room. Amid glass centerpieces decorated with orchids, roses and hydrangeas, guests dined on beef and chicken before the final touch of sparkle: the cake, a square-shaped masterpiece covered in a Swarovski crystal wrap, with layers of flavors including raspberry, chocolate-chip swirl, pineapple coconut and vanilla rum.
Meanwhile, on the dance floor, a DJ from 84 West Studios kept guests entertained, even helping Alexander use his choreographed Michael Jackson dance skills during the removal of the garter belt. The celebration continued the next day when family and friends joined the couple at their apartment for a Caribbean-themed dinner, a nod to the couple’s roots (her family is from the Dominican Republic; his is from Puerto Rico). An additional highlight? A repeat appearance by their new puppy, Thor.
