Snapshot-worthy city moments, captured!

700 N.
Michigan Ave.

Capturing the bustle of the city streets is nothing new to photographer Satoki Nagata, who has been documenting the comings and goings of Chicagoans for years. “I want to show people, and their lives in the city of Chicago, with emotion and intimacy,” he says. “Making such images is both very challenging and fun for a visually creative person.” The transparent layering in this captivating photo of a woman walking past the windows of the Michigan Avenue AllSaints store (note the British brand’s signature antique sewing machines) during a heavy rain storm is not the result of multiple exposures or digital wizardry, but Nagata’s use of an off-camera flash. “I found this distinct technique three years ago, and I find it conveys a feeling of everyday life very well.”
