This magnificent flowering bonsai, in transit to a new locale within the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum at the National Arboretum, is what lawyer and self-described “advanced amateur” photographer Toshio Kishiyama calls “serenity on the move.”

Intrigued by the juxtaposition of the cart and the tree, Kishiyama used his Canon 7D to capture the rolling bonsai at the exhibit, the largest collection of bonsai and penjing trees in North America. “Their Zenlike qualities have a way of conveying a sense of peacefulness and serenity,” Kishiyama says of the trees, known in Japan for bringing harmony to anyone who grows and nurtures them. Clearly, the trees can work their magic, even as they sit regally upon a rusty cart.
