Carla Hall has a busy summer ahead of her, with the launch of her latest cookbook, Carla’s Comfort Foods ($30, Atria Books), and appearing on her hit ABC show, The Chew. But the Top Chef All-Stars alum is a Washington girl through and through. We caught up with the DC resident and got her top tips for a delicious day in the nation’s capital.
9AM Start the day with breakfast at Lincoln’s Waffle Shop. “It’s a simple, no frills, greasy spoon in Downtown DC with a really cool counter,” says Hall. “I love the banana pancakes.” 504 10th St. NW, 202.638.4008
10AM Jump on the Metro and head to Union Station, where you can rent a bike for sightseeing. “If you haven’t seen our beautiful train station, this will kill two birds with one stone,” says Hall. “And biking is the best way to see the city while working off a big breakfast.” Union Station, 50 Massachusetts Ave. NE, 202.289.1908; Bike the Sites, 202.962.0206
2PM Return your bike and make your way to the U Street Corridor. “There are lots of little shops and restaurants here. My new favorite for lunch is The Blind Dog Cafe. It’s simple and unpretentious. Claim one of the comfy chairs or sofas if they’re available.” 944 Florida Ave. NW, 202.290.2865
4PM Head over to Dupont Circle, “a great place to people watch, shop and browse the book selection at Kramerbooks & Afterwords.” 1517 Connecticut Ave. NW, 202.387.1400
6PM Check out Logan Circle’s bustling 14th Street corridor. Pearl Dive Oyster Palace offers fantastic, fresh oysters and an upstairs bocce court. “I like the vibe. It’s relaxed and fun. You can hang at the bar, sit in the restaurant or get it to go and dine (outdoors).” 1612 14th St. NW, 202.319.1612
8PM End the evening with a concert at The Howard Theatre. “There’s a lot of music that happens after dark in DC,” says Hall. “Check out the new renovation of the historic theater—it’s gorgeous—and get tickets for whatever act is playing that night.” 620 T St. NW, 202.803.2899
