Like any good superhero, Anastasia Dellaccio takes on global scourges by day and makes the world a little sweeter at night.
“I like to joke that gelato can help solve the world’s biggest problems one scoop at a time,” says Dolci Gelati co-founder Anastasia Dellaccio, who can say that with some tongue-in-cheek authority, given that she works full time at the international development-focused United Nations Foundation. “I feel fortunate to be doing two things I’m really passionate about.”
Dellaccio, 31, and her Naples, Italy-born husband, Gianluigi, founded their company in DC after he left a high-profile job as executive pastry chef at Laboratorio Del Galileo. His family has been in the gelato business in Europe since the 1920s, and Dolci Gelati has been built around their traditional recipes and practices. After seven years of supplying restaurants and markets like Whole Foods, the couple just opened their first store in Takoma Park and plan to open a second at the City Market in Shaw early next year.
“Our growth has been incredible,” says Dellaccio, who studied marketing and communications as an undergrad at George Washington University and got her master’s degree in international policy from the University of London. She heads up the company’s marketing, social media and business development efforts, while her husband is the culinary mastermind.
Visitors to the new shop will be treated to creamy splendor that’s rooted in nearly 100 years of family tradition. But hidden among the time-tested classics in Dolci Gelati’s line of 300 gelato flavors and 44 sorbets are some exciting twists, including apple calvados, burnt ginger and kettle corn. The Dellaccio kids, Valentina, 5, and Gianluca, 3, are no doubt part of the tasting panel.
“We eat healthy, traditional Italian dishes at home,” says Dellaccio of family meals in their 16th Street Heights home. “Followed, of course, by gelato or sorbet.”
