Leraldo Anzaldua performs in this month’s Shakespeare Festival at Miller Outdoor Theater.
As the Houston Shakespeare Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary this month, local actor Leraldo Anzaldua—who’s also 40, it turns out—is gearing up for his fifth appearance in the fest, presented by UH at Miller Outdoor Theater. This year’s series includes Henry IV, Part I, in which Anzaldua portrays valiant knight Hotspur. “Playing such an iconic role is challenging,” explains the thesp, who’s also known around the world for his voiceover work in Japanese anime films. He actually sees commonalities between his Bard roles and the Asian graphic art. “The characters in the two genres are oddly similar,” he says. “Ultimately, both play on epic heroes doing what is right.”
