Continuing a tradition started by Alex Penelas in 1988, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos A. Giménez hosted the 15th annual Mayor’s Ball at the InterContinental Miami Hotel in downtown. On the agenda? Mingling, dancing and serious fundraising.
More than 1,000 business and community leaders made the rounds in their black-tie best. Among the VIPs in attendance were Jeff and Yolanda Berkowitz, who served as the gala’s chairs, as well as vice chairs Leonard and Jayne Abess; Sandy Grossman and Richard Berkowitz; Shelly and Steve Brodie; Alexia and Hernan Echevarria; Alexander P. Heckler; Debbie and Christopher Hodgkins; Marcelo Llorente and Jorge Luis Lopez; and Jo and John Sumberg.
After cocktails and meet-and-greets, guests entered the ballroom of the InterContinental for a three-course dinner at the start of which Giménez welcomed the crowd and led a toast. With formalities out of the way, attendees took the dance floor to show off their moves alongside taller-than-tall stilt-walking performers—all to the live sounds of Latin Ambition. By evening’s end, the affair had raised $1 million for the United Way’s Miami-Dade efforts.
