BMW unveils a supercar sedan with the M6 Gran Coupe.
Once you take it for a spin, it becomes clear that the 2014 BMW M6 Gran Coupe could only have been conceived by BMW’s engineers in Munich. A four-door supercar with enough space to carry three adult passengers in back, this is a car born of the autobahn. Power is the name of the game.
A twin-turbocharged V-8 generating 560 hp enables the M6 Gran Coupe to pass virtually anything else on the road. And while it’s unlikely you’ll ever have the chance to max the M6 Gran Coupe out at its top speed of 155 mph, seeing the look on fellow motorists’ faces as the four-door sprints from 0 to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds provides just as much of a thrill. Speed like this demands fierce control, so don’t pass on the $9,250 carbon ceramic brake package. The impressive high-performance option increases the life of the brakes and rotors by up to four times the norm, and cuts weight by 42 pounds.
In the looks department, the M6 Gran Coupe is an athlete in an Armani suit. Thanks to its oversize kidney-shaped grille and signature LED angel eyes, there’s no confusing it with anything other than a BMW. In fact, it’s almost identical to its two-door sibling, save for the addition of the doors and 4.5 inches of new space between the front and rear wheels. Trunk room is also expanded by 5 cu. ft. to an impressive 16 cu. ft.—more than even the BMW 5 Series sedan.
Aside from the rather discreet M-performance badges on the steering wheel, gearshift and instrument cluster, you are not likely to notice a difference between the M6 Gran Coupe and a true full-size vehicle. Finely stitched leather on nearly every surface, black piano lacquer trim and legroom rivaling traditional sedans give the car a decidedly luxurious interior feel—a stark contrast to its sporty exterior. High-tech gadgets abound, including a jet-fighter-like head-up display that projects speed, navigation instructions and other critical data onto the windshield, allowing you to keep your eyes on the road. Which, in this most powerful of four-doors, is a very good idea.
