Best of the City

What’s not to love about Dallas? It’s easy on the eyes, stylish and confident. Plus, we rock it all year long. Here are the people and places topping our list for 2013.

In Her Skin
When a quest for the perfect belt landed Susie Straubmueller at a local leather master, he challenged her to make it herself. Done. Next step: Design the perfect handbag.  Friends started noticing, and boutiques came courting her croc-embossed cowhide clutches. “Stores started asking me if I could work with genuine exotic skins, and I said yes,” she laughs, “but I had no idea how!” She trained with leather masters in Colombia, where she learned finishing, tanning, and the infrastructure of the structured bag—a cornerstone of her collection. Straubmueller’s limited editions—10 only of each style—range from  buttery, hand-painted, tanned leathers to a sueded-out python in nubuck finish. She accepts custom commissions. You can even monogram the acrylic display box in which each bag comes nestled.

Downtown’s New Smile
Klyde Warren Park, the recently inaugurated 5.2-acre deck park that’s essentially the front lawn to the Dallas Arts District, is a brilliant win for the city. The October opening weekend, for all its attendant hoopla, only hinted at the long-range marvel of the plaza, a European-flavored urban park that offers something for everyone, and always for free. Quality-of-life-enhancing highlights include a performance stage, walking paths, game area, children’s park, dog park and native landscaping and water features; it’s a vibrant, verdant oasis that balances relaxation with activity. Watch for Savor and Relish to open mid 2013; until then, catch a bite at the Relish food truck.
