The Outsiders

David Sutherland pairs up with Restoration Hardware for a line that will keep you elegantly outdoors all summer.

Restoration Hardware’s new Costa chaises were a collaboration with Dallas-based David Sutherland, who was inspired by designs envisioned earlier by furniture innovator John Hutton. Teak base, $2,015-$2,675; cushion, $495-$845.

The seed for Restoration Hardware’s new collaboration with Dallas-based David Sutherland showroom was planted in 2002, when then RH CEO Gary Friedman purchased outdoor teak furniture for his home in Tiburon, Calif. “We caught his eye,” says David, whose wife, Ann Sutherland, began providing her Perennials outdoor fabrics to RH three years ago. But this is David’s first foray into the retail market, and late this spring, RH launched the 32-piece teak Costa Collection of low-slung chairs, lounges, tables and sofas. The furniture was actually envisioned years earlier by the late, great furniture designer John Hutton, a friend and frequent collaborator of the Sutherlands’, whose trade-only showrooms across the country are a mainstay. “The most exciting thing is to bring good design to a larger audience,” says David. “At the wholesale level, we tend to think that only a very few understand and appreciate design, but that just isn’t true. Steve Jobs and Gary Friedman knew that there was a much broader audience for good products, well designed.” $525-$5,905, 3133 Knox St., 214.520.7255; 5217 Alpha Road, 972.404.8707
