'wHat' Now?
by Jennifer Thornton | Modern Luxury Hawai'i magazine | January 23, 2012Exhibitionism is on the lips of art lovers as Kauai’s galerie 103 is set to stage its latest exhibit, the thought-provoking and aptly titled wHat. Currently on exhibit, this pioneering examination explores the identity and intersection of myriad art forms. Featured is work from prominent art worlders. Expect to see large-scale abstract paintings from Tom Lieber next to intricate art-couture—think elaborate gowns crafted from wind-blown umbrella castoffs—by Louda Larrain. Images from her other half, photographer Gilles Larrain, lauded for his portraits of provocateurs Salvador Dalí, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Miles Davis, promise to raise both eyebrows and consciousness. Also among the parade of conceptual conversation starters is sculptural art-furnishings made from found objects and reclaimed materials by Kauai-based artist Doug Britt, Honolulu's Christopher Reiner and Santa Fe's Tom Emerson. From fine art to design, wHat is a kinetic study in eclecticism—and a great night out. wHat runs through March 1. galerie103.com
