Small Plate Perfection

Keep your options open the next time you head out to dinner in Honolulu. If you stick to the starters at these creative restos, you’ll be more than satisfied.

The kiawe-smoked beef carpaccio at Bali Steak & Seafood

1. Bali Steak & Seafood
We’re in love with the kiawe-smoked beef carpaccio at this recently renovated Waikiki classic. It goes particularly well with this resto’s powerful mai tai. Hilton Hawaiian Village, 2005 Kālia Road, Waikīkī, O‘ahu, 949.4321

2. 12th Ave Grill
Head to the bar at this Kaimukī favorite to enjoy one of the most creative happy hour menus around. Case in point: Those who are over the typical chicken wing but still crave finger food will definitely enjoy the duck wings. 1145 12th Ave., Kaimukī, 732.9469

3. Beachhouse at the Moana
Carnivores will definitely delight in the offerings at this oceanfront eatery. Think thick cut strips of bacon served liked fries, just waiting to be dipped in black pepper mayonnaise. Of course, there’s also the foie gras toast. Moana Surfrider, A Westin Resort & Spa, 2365 Kalākaua Ave., Waikīkī, 921.4600

4. Bills
Flavors are both eclectic and familiar at this new Aussie outpost. We suggest noshing on cassava chips with romesco sauce or the superbly gorgeous hummus platter with crispy flatbread. 280 Beachwalk, Waikīkī, 922.1500

5. Kan Zaman
While couscous and other mains surely tempt at this Chinatown hot spot, we’re enamored of the flavorful mezze. Graze on the likes of falafel, stuffed grape leaves and very tasty babaganoush. 1028 Nu‘uanu Ave., Chinatown, 554.3847
