The Eclectic Company

Honolulu’s cuisine scene has broadened its horizons. Here, five hot spots where we’ve been making reservations.

Get ready to eat well at Andrew Le’s The Pig and The Lady.

1. The Pig and The Lady
Andrew Le’s has reinvigorated Downtown Honolulu with the opening of The Pig and The Lady in Chinatown. Not only can one enjoy this toque’s fresh interpretation of Vietnamese flavors at this cool resto—we love his takes on the classic banh mi (Vietnamese sandwich)—but there’s also a hip bar and late-night menu that recently debuted to appropriate raves. 83 N. King St., Chinatown, 585.8255

2. Kan Zaman
We’ve become huge fans of this Chinatown destination. Chefs Youssef Dakroub and Kamal Jemmari have created a culinary mecca, thanks to their approachable and flavorful takes on the cuisines of the Levant and North Africa. Bring your favorite wine and feast on falafel, tagines and couscous. 1028 Nu‘uanu Ave., Chinatown, 554.3847

3. Sushi Ginza Onodera
You’ll feel like you’ve been whisked to Japan when you settle at this recently opened sushi bar, offering fresh seafood flown in from Tokyo’s Tsukiji Fish Market and other overseas destinations. The menu is simple: omakase courses that start at $160. This is Sushi Onodera’s second location; the main restaurant is in Tokyo’s superchic Ginza district. 808 Kapahulu Ave., Kapahulu, 735.2375

4. Azure
Chef de Cuisine Shaymus Alwin—a native of Maine who’s studied under Thomas Keller of The French Laundry—recently stepped into this lead role, after a stint as the restaurant’s executive sous chef. This acclaimed resto does many things well, but its preparation of fresh, local fish is particularly exquisite. The Royal Hawaiian, 2259 Kalākaua Ave., Waikīkī, 923.7311

5. MW Restaurant
Husband-and-wife team Wade Ueoka and Michelle Karr-Ueoka, both longtime Alan Wong protégés, have opened their own restaurant, an upscale eatery with creative lunch and dinner options that continues to explore a culinary path they’re well-versed in, Hawai‘i Regional Cuisine that uses lots of fresh, locally grown ingredients. 1538 Kapi‘olani Blvd., Ala Moana/Kapi‘olani, 955.6505
