On the Lighter Side

Before the holidays arrive in full force, take some time to lighten up—and that means your meals. To make things simple, we’ve come up with our short list of healthy destinations that don’t sacrifice taste.

Head to Blue Tree Cafe in Kaka‘ako for outstanding bites, fresh juices and kombucha, and serious kaffeeklatsch.

Blue Tree Cafe
There’s so much to love about this mecca of cool opened by Kevin Aoki of Doraku Sushi. Beverages run the gambit of smoothies, fresh juices, housemade kombucha and delicious coffee. Bites, many of them vegetarian, include both the savory (kale salad) and the delectably sweet (vegan cheesecake). Of course, we love the urbane decor too. 1009 Kapi‘olani Blvd., Kaka‘ako, 591.2033,

Juice Box
This hot spot on Monsarrat Avenue by Diamond Head may have no phone number or website, but it still has managed to amass a cult following since it opened earlier this year. One sip of the fresh juice blends (always made to order, of course) quickly explains why. Devotees will definitely want to inquire about the new juice cleanse program. 3118 Monsarrat Ave., Diamond Head

Greens and Vines
In a town where gastropubs and hearty fare have become de rigueur, this revolutionary eatery has offered refuge for those who like their cuisine as natural as possible. And that means all dishes are vegan and raw. But fret not. Gourmet selections like lemony zucchini bisque and kaffir miso pad thai will satisfy any palate. Try Italian, Japanese and French items at its first anniversary party on Oct. 27 from 1 to 4PM. 909 Kapi‘olani Blvd., Kaka‘ako, 536.9680,

‘Āina Gourmet Market
This culinary haven in Kā‘anapali truly goes local, taking Maui-grown products and putting them onto the shelves and into the menu. (Gourmet dishes are available at breakfast, lunch and dinner.) Add to that magnificent Maui-grown coffees and a superb wine collection that includes organic and biodynamic selections. A smaller, second location serving coffee and lighter fare opened at The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua earlier this year. Honua Kai Resort and Spa, 130 Kai Malina Parkway, Kā‘anapali, Maui, 662.2832; The Ritz-Carlton, Kapalua, 1 Ritz-Carlton Drive, Kapalua, Maui, 669.6200,

Living Foods Market & Cafe
While there may be no Whole Foods on Kaua‘i, there is this tastefully curated, homegrown alternative at the chic Shops at Kukui‘ula. After shopping for locally grown produce, try one of the outstanding breakfast or lunch items. The Shops at Kukui‘ula, 2829 Ala Kalanikaumaka, Po‘ipū, Kaua‘i, 742.2323
