THE COUPLE
Nora Boneham and Mollie Kryka fell in love after serving as teammates on University of Wisconsin-Madison’s rowing team. When Nora decided to ask her longtime girlfriend to be her teammate for life, she proposed at the Public Chicago Hotel’s 17th floor Ava room while 25 of their closest friends and family hid in an adjacent space for a surprise celebration.

THE DETAILS
Ten months later, the couple’s family and friends gathered again at Fourth Presbyterian Church for the brides’ heartfelt and superpersonal nuptials. The ceremony kicked off with a 45-minute jazz quartet set, and the pair were officially announced wife and wife after a symbolic reading from Obergefell v. Hodges—the monumental Supreme Court case that legalized same-sex marriage across the country.

THE PARTY
“The ultimate goal for our wedding was to make it feel like an intimate candlelit dinner party with some really good jazz music,” remembers the couple, who, along with planner Bridget Rogers of Shannon Gail Weddings and Events, transformed the Chicago Athletic Association’s gorgeous ornate ballroom into the perfect setting. Guests took dance breaks to Stu Hirsh Orchestra’s tunes between dinner courses, and the whole room laugh-cried during the brides’ sisters’ speeches. At evening’s end, the pair capped off the evening with a lively afterparty in the CAA’s Game Room before jetting off on a romantic Montana getaway.
