Porsche marries fuel efficiency and autobahn performance with its high-tech marvel, the 2014 Panamera S E-Hybrid luxury sports sedan.
It’s electric. It’s gasoline. It’s both. Porsche’s new redesigned 2014 Panamera combines the best of both worlds: zero emissions of a plug-in electric motor with the power and unlimited long-distance range of a V6 gasoline engine. It’s a perfect marriage that, when working together, shoots the Panamera S E-Hybrid from 0 to 60 mph in a very Porsche-like 5.2 seconds, maxing out at an autobahn-worthy top speed of 167 mph. No, this isn’t your typical hybrid—the Panamera S E-Hybrid was developed by supercar engineers at Porsche.
Compared to the previous generation Panamera Hybrid, this new model’s high-voltage battery stores more than five times the energy, and its electric motor is twice as powerful, ringing up 95 horsepower versus 47. This means drivers can cruise on all-electric power at speeds up to 84 mph and run on a single charge for more than 20 miles. After that distance, the Panamera automatically switches to hybrid mode, using its V6 gasoline engine and electric battery to deliver optimal fuel efficiency no matter the distance. The beauty of such a system, as compared to an all-electric vehicle like the Tesla, is the elimination of range anxiety, that feeling you get when your all-electric car displays a low battery warning and you might not make it to the next battery charging station.
The Panamera is uniquely Porsche and a standout in the luxury arena for its distinctive shape and aggressive styling. New for 2014 are larger air intakes up front and optional LED headlights—two LED lighting systems stacked on top of each other—creating a striking look that cuts through the dark of night. Also behold those slick neon green brake calipers peering through the optional 20-inch rims, a key to distinguishing the Panamera Hybrid from its all-gasoline siblings.
Inside, one thing is missing from the Panamera: that awful middle rear seat. Instead, Porsche outfitted the Panamera with two superluxurious backseats with available eight-way power adjustability and even dual-zone rear climate control. The result is a decadent interior for four, offering each passenger a comfortable ride with all the luxury trimmings you’ve come to expect. Yet, unlike most luxury cars, the Panamera is still a Porsche at heart, which means it’s wickedly fun to drive. And now, with its new hybrid power train, it’s supremely eco-friendly too. The 2014 Panamera S E-Hybrid is a guilt-free indulgence—the closest thing to eating your cake and having it too. Available at Loeber Motors in Lincolnwood
