Dog Bites
by Rita Goldberg | Riviera Orange County magazine | February 6, 2012Sure, we’re all pretty well-trained when it comes to checking the food labels on stuff we’re placing on our own tables. But for our doggies’ dishes—not so much. (Did you know it’s OK for manufacturers to use things like peanut shells, sawdust and even worse as filler?) That’s where Shawn Buckley comes in. The founder of Just Food For Dogs in Newport Beach (500 W. Coast Highway, 949.722.3647, justfoodfordogs.com) produces freshly made meals for Fido using all-natural ingredients, like beef and russet potatoes. It’s no wonder that within a year, Just Food For Dogs has amassed more than 1,400 tail-wagging clients. (His chefs produce about 800 pounds of food a day.) A specialty vet with credentials in canine nutrition is on staff to ensure that each order provides the required daily allowance of protein, fiber and fat to keep pups healthy. For dogs with special dietary needs, customized plans are available. So what does it cost? About $80 per month for a mid-size dog. If you prefer a less pricey option, free cooking classes are offered, so you can prepare the same menu at home.
