A flight through history at the Lyon Air Museum in Santa Ana.

Lyon Air Museum, Santa Ana

Wherever Ken Lane decides to vacation, he finds an airplane museum to visit. And during his trip to O.C. in May, he found Lyon Air Museum and arrived as crews were preparing for a Curator luxury event. So, in addition to the museum’s own collection of World War II-era planes and automobiles, there were a few lustworthy cars from Aston Martin, Rolls-Royce and BMW. “I enjoy car photography as well,” says Lane, who lives in Asheville, N.C. But of all the photos he snapped that day, this shot of a Douglas C-47 Skytrain—which he titled “On the Wings”—was the sweetest. “I was walking behind this aircraft and happened to look back through the window bays,” he recalls. “There comes a time when you look at something and see the shot already in your mind. This was one of those moments.” Lane took the pic in color, but he was inspired by the vintage nature of the plane: “When I capture something and turn it into a black-and-white image, then I know I’ve captured something special.”
