It was a plum assignment, shooting Rihanna in concert at Honda Center in Anaheim.

And Gabriel Olsen was one of just a handful of photographers capturing the performance through the eye of their lenses. He had CBS Radio and Film Magic/Getty Images to thank for that, and he had a few fans to thank for his positioning. “Two of the photographers had 400 mm lenses, which gave them a strong advantage when we were set up 100 rows back. I only had half the reach,” he recalls. “I was able to talk a few of the fans into graciously giving me a better position that allowed me extra reach over the flickering blue sea of cellphones.” He fixed his frame on the singing sensation and then waited. “I started thinking, ‘Just look right over here.’ I always try to capture eye contact to really make the image personal to the viewer.” And then it happened.
