Flower Power
The Party Design and architecture buffs descended upon the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla for the annual ceremony. Sam “the Cooking Guy” Zien emceed this year’s much-ballyhooed awards. The Scene Bathrooms are the new black, apparently, as architect Kevin deFreitas won for his comfort station in O.B. and husband-and-wife team Safdie Rabines earned an Orchid for their retro restroom in Oceanside. Meanwhile, Car2Go’s East Village HQ earned Paul Basile yet another Orchid for his signature industrial, clean design. The architectural powerhouse that is USCD came out a winner again for its new Gold LEED-rated medical building. Thankfully, the Onion-nominated “Fallen Star” sculpture from UCSD’s Stuart Collection failed to earn the stinky award. The Highlights The Grand Orchid was not given to a building this year, but to the Chicano Park Mural Restoration Project in Barrio Logan underneath the Coronado Bridge. Consider it a live culture. Keep eyes peeled for O&O’s new tours, scheduled throughout the year with Orchid winners and designers. Photography by Michael Klaymann
