Girl's Think Tank Gala
Girls Think Tank's fifth annual gala to raise money for its life-changing programs was held on May 31, 2013 in the dome of the downtown Central Library. This year's theme, "Stories Matter," suited both the venue and the broader picture of homelessness in San Diego: that each person living on the street has a story to tell, from the preschool teacher who lost her job to the man who returned from war during a down economy. These stories demonstrate that homelessness is not homogenous.
Among this year's attendees were several city attorneys and Councilmember Todd Gloria, who commended the organization for its tireless work. Girls Think Tank funds programs that advance basic human dignity, including the Transitional Storage Center on 16th and Commercial, where displaced citizens can leave their belongings while interviewing, working, attending school or enjoying mobility; a free legal clinic for the displaced; summer and winter survival backpacks and other grassroots and policy initiatives.
This year's event included music by a local DJ and a tasting menu from top local chefs and food purveyors, including fresh fish educational center Catalina Offshore, The Wellington Steak & Martini Lounge, The Red Door Restaurant & Wine Bar, Indulge Contemporary Cuisine, Bull Taco and Nothing Bundt Cakes.www.girlsthinktank.org/
