10 Best Events at SF Beer Week 2013

SF Beer Week (Feb. 8-17) has more than 200 events. Here's our favorite ten. 

 Our top ten beer events at SF Beer Week 2013.

From February 8th to 17th San Francisco will be swept by a Mavericks-sized wave of beer. From tastings to pairing dinners, and from seminars to workshops, here are our top picks for each day of the week. Remember, you can always create your own itinerary by visiting the website.

 

Friday, February 8th: Opening Celebration 
Event: The San Francisco Brewers Guild gathers together nearly 80 California breweries for one magical night you will (might?) remember. Tickets are $75, including a commemorative Beer Week glass and unlimited samples of new, rare, and classic beers, organized by region. Music is curated by Noise Pop and artisanal foods from Bay Area vendors help you stay vertical throughout the night.

Details: 6–10pm. Concourse Exhibition Center, 620 7th St, San Francisco.

Price: $75 plus fees. 

 

Saturday, February 9th: Sipping Session with White Labs’ Kara Taylor, Analytical Laboratory Specialist
Event: “It’s Alive!!” celebrates beer’s hardest working ingredient—yeast—and features San Diego's White Labs, a leader in yeast production. White Labs have brewed a wheat beer specifically for this educational tasting session, using the same recipe four times with different yeast strains. Linger afterwards to sip more beers, while assembling your ultimate mix-and-match 6-pack.

Details: 3-5pm. City Beer Store, 1168 Folsom Street, San Francisco. 

Price: No admission, pay as you go. 

 

Sunday, February 10th: Pyramid Brewery’s Beer Judging 101
Event: Sample and compare world-class beers while honing your beer senses and vocabulary under the guidance of Grand Master BJCP beer judge David Teckam.

Details: Pyramid’s Berkeley beer house, makes an ideal classroom. Section 1: 12pm-1:30pm. Section 2: 2:30pm-4pm. Pyramid Alehouse, Brewery & Restaurant, 901 Gilman St, Berkeley

Price: Admission is $30. 

 

Monday, February 11th: A Pair of Cheese Pairings at Rogue Ales Public House and Mission Cheese
Event: Enjoy another west coast great in Rogue Beer at an 8-course cheese and beer pairing. Located at Rogue Ales Public House, Sheana Davis of the Epicurean Connection hosts. 6-8pm Rogue Ales Public House, 673 Union Street, San Francisco Tickets: $45 Rogue Nation Members, $50 Non-Members Reservations encouraged, call (415) 362-7880.

If you prefer Drake’s to Rogue and the Mission to North Beach, check out another cheese pairing event at Mission Cheese. This one is 5–courses, complete with another Beer Week favorite: Drake’s Hopocalypse double IPA.

Tuesday, February 12th: 21st Amendment Strong Beer School
Event: Tuesday is another school night with special guest brewer Reed Miller from Stone Brewing Co. Seven beers should loosen you up: from a Triple IPA to a classic Barley Wine. According to the organizers, food pairings will be “bold and steadfast” against the “powerful lineup” of beer.

Details: 7-9pm.  21st Amendment Brewery, 563 2nd Street, San Francisco.

Price: Admission is $45. 

 

Wednesday, February 13th: Pliny the Younger
Event: Each year Russian River Brewing Company releases—quietly and locally—the much-anticipated Pliny the Younger, the triple IPA overachieving kid brother of Pliny the Elder. If you can’t make the pilgrimage to Russian River in Santa Rosa, where Pliny is available now, stick around the Bay and track down the Younger at select locations. Monk’s Kettle is receiving one keg, and this year all proceeds go to charity.

Details: 12– 1:30pm. The Monk's Kettle, 3141 16th Street, San Francisco.

Price: $10 for 10 oz, 2 per person limit, cash only. 

 

Thursday, February 14th: Happy Valentines Day
Event: The “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” is an atypical beer and chocolate pairing at the brand new Speakeasy Tap Room, a new tasting room and bar which opens just in time for beer week. Speakeasy will roll out four limited release beers from their cellar, each paired with chocolates from the gourmet Socola Chocolatier.

Details: 2–8pm. Speakeasy Ales & Lagers , 1195 Evans Ave, San Francisco.

Price: Admission is free. 

 

Friday, February 15th: Almanac Butchers & Beers
Event: By this point in beer week, brews have paired off with just about everything. Now it’s meat’s turn. This event includes beer tastings from local breweries like Almanac, delicious pork and a butchery demo from 4505 Meats ’ Ryan Farr, and a silent charity auction of the pork cuts.

Details: 6–9pm. St. Gregory's, 500 De Haro St., San Francisco.

Price: Admission is $60. 

 

Saturday, February 16th: 20th Annual Toronado Barleywine Festival
Event: Toronado, one of the Haight’s foremost beer destinations, doesn’t have to advertise too heavily for the return of its well-attended (read: crowded) Barleywine festival. A hard-hitting English beer style, Barleywine is characterized by its rich, smoky wine-like flavor and high alcohol content. It’s expensive to brew and often hard to find— but not on Saturday at Toronado.

Price: No charge for admission, pay as you go. 

 

Sunday, February 17th: “Points North” at St. Vincent
Event: The folks at St. Vincent host this second dinner in their two-part series "From The Seed To The Kernel," beer's answer to wine’s "from the root to the fruit.” Each six-course, seven-beer meal will match one of St. Vincent’s favorite veteran brewers with an up and coming new brewer. These dinners are a great deal by beer week’s high-priced dining standards. “Points North” will feature Marin Brewing Co. (Larkspur), Henhouse Brewing (Petaluma), and promises to be a delicious way to wrap up the long week. Pairings are by certified Cicerone Sayre Piotrkowski. If “Points North” isn’t enough, first check out “Points South” on Sunday the 10th for pairings with Craftsman Brewing Co. (Pasadena) and Sante Adairius Rustic Ales (Capitola).
