50 Shades of Grey: The BDSM-Themed Parody Musical You've Been Waiting For

Getting kinky with co-writer and co-producer Emily Dorezas.

50 Shades of Grey: The Musical, a smutty, campy parody of the bestselling erotic saga opens tomorrow night at the Marines' Memorial Theater. We sat down with co-writer/co-producer Emily Dorezas, a member of the acclaimed musical comedy troupe Baby Wants Candy, to talk about the tale that turned a million Midwestern housewives into a million sexual deviants.

When you started collaborating on writing this show, you hadn’t actually read the books. What do you think of them now?
I didn’t realize how involved the BDSM stuff was. This book is not Peyton Place. When we started writing the show, I thought this was too raunchy, but it was just icing on the cake compared to the book.

It seems to have made reading porn on the bus safe.
It’s definitely an iPad or e-reader book. Our co-producer, Marshall, got this whole thing got started because he was watching a news story about a hardware store running out of rope thanks to this book. So he was like, I’ve got to read this book.

Have these books been successful because they have created a new set of sexual desires or are they tapping into something that’s always present?
Women love porn—they just want to have some intellect involved with it. When they are reading a book, they feel like at least they are being productive. Also, many women just want someone else make to some decisions. I think in most houses, women wear the pants. This book allows them to take off their pants.

Why do a parody?
If it were a straight version, we’d get sued. Besides, we are all comedy people. It’s what we do.

Ever had an audience member storm out?
Yes. I don’t know if it’s a storm, but they’re definitely like, this is not what I expected.

Because the fans feel ownership, right?
They’ve had sex with this book. I don’t fault them for it—but it’s not even in the fine print. It’s right there in the title that we are doing a parody.

What was the biggest surprise for you about the souce material?
Well, I don’t know what you can print.

We’re online. It's cool.
Okay. A big part of the book involves fisting. I know my aunt read this. My Grandma ordered the large print.

50 Shades of Grey: The Musical plays at the Marines' Memorial Theater from July 23 to July 28.
