Bed down in the barracks

How to stay in the Presidio overnight without sleeping on the ground.

The new Inn at the Presidio opened last month, reversing a long history of the park’s rebuffing similar attempts by other hotels. Turns out, it wasn’t new businesses that were the problem; it was new buildings (hence the thumbs-down for the Fisher art collection but thumbs-up for the Walt Disney Family Museum). The small bed-and-breakfast (22 rooms) is housed in the 1903 former Bachelor Officers’ Quarters in Building 42, and it retains many original design features. It’s a perfect location for out-of-towners who want to play in the city and zip over the bridge to go wine tasting in Napa, and for locals seeking a nonurban staycation. Another key audience (and another about-face of history, given the building’s original purpose): people looking to get hitched. There’s a chapel next door, and staff say they’ve already had several sets of newlyweds-to-be reserve the entire inn for their wedding party.

Rooms from $195, 42 Moraga Ave., S.F., 415-800-7356, innatthepresidio.com
