Betsey Johnson’s West Coast flagship closing, everything on sale

It’s a little after ten on a Tuesday morning, and Alice Johnson is already fielding calls from deal-seekers.

“It feels like Black Friday,” said Johnson, store manager of the Betsey Johnson boutique on Grant Ave., which is beginning to close its doors a mere eight months after opening.

Johnson is facing the on-the-ground reality of the Betsey Johnson bankruptcy, filed on April 26, according to WWD. All 54 U.S. stores and nine outlets began liquidation sales on Friday. While she doesn’t know when the store will officially close its doors, she knows she and her nine employees are out of jobs.

“My liquidation guy has his hotel booked through mid-July,” she said, her only indication of the final closing date.

Johnson’s store, considered the West Coast flagship for the brand, has the highest volume in California. She expects to receive another 750 items on Friday, but she said any shipments will not be new inventory and may include merchandise from past seasons.

Everything in the store not already on markdown is 20 percent off currently, a discount that may increase as the closing date nears. At the end of the liquidation process, even the store displays will be available to purchase.

On April 27, the day after the company filed for bankruptcy, Betsey Johnson (@xoBetseyJohnson) sent out the following missive via Twitter: “I love my brand I love my fans and I'm not going anywhere! As creative director, it’s full speed ahead. Thanks beyond and beyond! xox Betsey.”
