Bummer of the Day: SF Zoo's Banana Sam Is Dead

The squirrel monkey shot to fame when he was kidnapped in 2011. 

The San Francisco Zoo announced today that Banana Sam has died of complications relating to heart disease. The 19-year-old squirrel monkey who rocketed to international fame after he was brazenly kidnapped during a nighttime heist, only to be discovered, hungry and tired a day later.

His keepers found he had been taken from his enclosure the during the night of Dec. 30, 2011. The intruders had cut the wire in his enclosure to steal him. After a $5,000 reward was offered, a man came forward with the monkey, claiming to have found him in Stern Grove and lured him into his backpack. During his time on the outside, Banana Sam was a frequent Twitter user.

Banana Sam is survived by a troop of around 20 members.
