“Finding a white harbor
porpoise in the Pacific”
isn’t quite as catchy as
“finding a needle in a
haystack,” but it’s just
as difficult. According
to the scientists at
Golden Gate Cetacean
Research, who have
been charting the
recent return, after 65
years, of other harbor
porpoises to the San
Francisco bay, there
have been only six
white porpoise sightings
reported in the
last 100 years, and
only two were in the
Pacific Ocean. The
organization will be
monitoring the bay’s
lone near-albino (note
the dark spot on its
head) to determine
how its unique pigmentation

If Major League
Baseball’s all-time
walks leader Barry
Bonds doesn’t look too
concerned outside the
federal courthouse, it’s
likely because he just

Fire chief Joanne
Hayes-White and nine
other firefighters were
attending a funeral
for one of their own,
Ronald Caditan, when
they learned that a
major blaze was
spreading in Alamo
Square. As Hayes-
White stepped outside
the church on Geary
and 23rd and saw the
ominous black cloud in
the distance, she knew
that her team was in
for a harrowing ordeal.
The last five-alarm fire,
meaning one that
requires 146 personnel,
21 engines, 8
trucks, and 7 ambulances,
had been six
years before. Three
hours later (and just
three days before
Christmas), 50 people
were left without a
home. “I was amazed
that despite their losses,
they remained very
grateful that no one
died,” Hayes-White
