Down and Dirty App Explainer

What to expect from five of the new dating apps

Tinder
The gist: Hot or Not for adults that searches singles in your area (read: easy access)
Best for: Hooking up
Warning: The pickings are riddled with flakes

Grouper
The gist: Sets up groups of three (ladies or gentlemen) for a night of potential canoodling at a bar
Best for: Socializing
Warning: Shy guys are shy—no matter what the social setting

Coffee Meets Bagel
The gist: Daily "bagel" matches; if you "like" one within 24 hours, you can set up a date
Best for: Dating around
Warning: It pools your mutual Facebook friends, so beware of FB incest.

Crazy Blind Date
The gist: Pick a date spot, and the app sets you up with a stranger.
Best for: Post-date stories
Warning: Profile pictures are obscured, so there's no way to judge a book by his or her cover.

Swoon
The gist: Basically Tinder's less popular twin
Best for: Hooking up
Warning: Because you can't pick a preferred age, you see twentysomething jocks and fortysomething divoreés alike.
