Four Ways to Take Your Mind Off Miley Cyrus

Hot bands playing and releasing around the Bay. No twerking necessary.
If you need to wash the taste of Miley Cyrus’s tongue and cheek (but mostly tongue) VMA performance out of your mouth, that’s easy to do this week. Here, the Bay Area shows to hit plus a new release.
1. That line on Market and Turk stretching around the block? That's gonna be for MGMT, who play the Warfield tomorrow. Openers are Black Bananas and Kuroma. You’ll flip out when they rock out on "Time to Pretend" and "Kids," but their underrated effort on tracks from Congratulations might be the most satisfying part of your night. Listen to the title track without expecting the pop perfection of which they’ve proved themselves capable, and you’ll be happy you did.
2. Northern Cali Soul duo Myron and E will be hamming it up at Amoeba in Berkeley. The two have chops, with crooning that harks back to the Righteous and Everly brothers. “Do It Do It Disco” is a standout track to swish those bell-bottoms to.
3. If you don’t know alt-J by now, there’s no better time (than by this Thursday when they play the Fox). With guests Royal Canoe, the band named for the triangle shortcut on a keyboard (∆, try it) will rock out on tracks like "Breezeblocks" and "Fitzpleasure." The latter is admittedly an uneven tune, but contains great passages.
4. Last, The Visibles are stepping into visibility with a charming debut. The album is available September 10th, and their sound isn’t too far from MGMT with a bit of a surf-pop angle. Impose Magazine dropped some tracks for a sneak peak.
