A Hotel for Locals

Hotel Zetta braces to open as the city gets buzzing about Anna Weinberg's new restaurant, a slick game room, and retro-modern decor.
I’ve always been envious of New York hotels. Not necessarily because I want to stay there (though I do), but because places like The Ace and The Standard cater to both out of towners and locals. But I’m in luck. Soon San Francisco will have a hotel that’s not just for tourists. The Hotel Zetta, which has a soft opening February 18 and should be running at full speed by mid-March, offers more than comfortable modern rooms to crash in and a sweet bar (though it does have those too).
The sunlit lobby is sectioned into dynamic gathering spaces and decorated with repurposed art, like a three-foot dog sculpture comprised of old bolts and scrap metal, while a mosaic of film negatives is displayed on the main wall. But the first thing that will catch your eye is the chandelier of sunglasses, an ode to California summers.
In the mezzanine, the Playroom looks over the lobby, and features old school games (think childhood nostalgics like Atari and Nintendo) plus pool and shuffleboard. An antique British phone booth is tricked out with Skype and a phone for ordering drinks from the bar to one of the highboy tables or lounge area.
For those who do plan on taking advantage of the rooms, they have web-enabled flat screens so you can check your email or stream movies from your Netflix account via your smart phone or tablet, and each room has a female portrait comprised of old floppy disks. Warm-colored oriental rugs have been torn apart and quilted back together to offset the techie vibe, adding a homey touch. (Hint: request a room facing 5th Street for a decent view.)
