Lyft shaves the mustache for a more luxurious experience
This morning Lyft introduced their newest upgrade, Lyft Plus, adding the option to arrive in a more stylish vehicle-a matte white SUV, collaboratively designed with West Coast Customs.
Sitting on the 12 outbound, en route to Lyft headquarters, curiosity built in the pit of my stomach, last night. With uber's recent announcement of futuristic driverless cars, my imagination truly ran wild with images of winged cars, robots, the average lions, tigers and bears of magical future contraptions.
Stepping into Lyft's ominous headquarters, I am met with somewhat contradictory decor; plain cement floor and nearly barren walls, opposed by voluptuous, clear, glass, vases filled with pink star bursts and pink mustaches. The receptionist desk takes the cake for...um, eccentricity? A circular desk is wildly adorned with some kind of pink fabric tubing so it appears to have tentacles. Three girls blasting and loudly singing Usher's "Confessions" ask me to sign in and have my photo snapped by an iPad at the desk.
Katie Dally and Ethan Eyler, who claims the pink mustache was his baby, descend the switchback staircase towards me, beckoning me out back for the "unveiling". At the end of the parking lot is a matte white SUV with a custom grille, a tiny brushed steel mustache affixed to the left corner, 20 inch black and silver sport wheels. I will admit I was a little let down that it was just a nice car and not teleporting machine but maybe they're just not there yet.
I climbed into the backseat. Is this custom leather diamond stitching? And blue floodlights? A Phone charger and assortment of gourmet chocolate bars are in the console beside me. It is a six seater and passengers are encouraged to ride in the back, delight in a chauffeur feel, minus the dated black town car. And minus the pink mustache.
I think it was the exterior spotlights that let you know your stylish ride has arrived, that won me over.
Lyft Plus will cost 20% less than Uber Black and 40% less than Uber SUV , while still being twice the price of regular Lyft, according to Dally. They will be purchased and owned by drivers. Those kicking it off in San Francisco today are said to be some of Lyft's original drivers.
It was clean, modern and appealed to the LA clubber in me...to roll up to a line out the door of 1015 Folsom in in this stealthy new Lyft has just been added to my to do list.
