MAGAZINE REVIEW

VOLUME ONE: 25 WAYS TO BE A LOCAL
(The Bold Italic)
Hovering somewhere between rough-edged zine and sempervirent journal, 25 Ways to Be a Local is an admirable first print effort for San Francisco indie-lifestyle
site the Bold Italic. As the staff introduction to the large-format $3 mag admits, “Living in San Francisco means different things to different folks,” and 25 Ways is curated for both wannabe and actual vintage-clad locavores. A witty review of art spaces in the Tenderloin (No. 16) and a tale of dinner at the pop-up known as the Stag Dining Group (No. 10) are highly entertaining; not so much are the unenlightening takes on the Bushman (No. 14) and Broke-Ass Stuart’s now-ubiquitous Living in SF Means… cartoon (No. 17). Bold Italic regulars will be disappointed that most featurettes are repackaged from digital faves. But for everyone else, this condensed version of the website will be a pleasure to hold. After all, adorable illustrations, lilting commentary, and colorful design go a long way. B+
