The Best Stamp We've Ever Seen

You've got to give them hope—and proper postage.

Finally giving you something appropriate to use when mailing out wedding announcements, the United State Postal Service has released a stamp featuring the former San Francisco supervisor and gay rights icon Harvey Milk. It is, in a word, glorious. The stamp, officially celebrating Harvey Milk Day—which is today, May 22nd—is the first to feature an openly gay elected official (although likely-closeted President James Buchanan was on a stamp as early as 1938). It's a nifty tribute to the supervisor—and one that testifies to the strides that LGBT rights have made since Milk was assassinated in 1978.

Sales of the stamp were reported to be brisk around San Francisco today, with lines forming in the Castro. An informal dedication ceremony led by current Castro Supervisor Scott Wiener at the Harvey Milk plaza starts, oh, right this minute. A formal dedication at City Hall will take place next Wednesday.

In the meantime, go mail somebody some Harvey.
