The Raiders Are No Longer the Thuggiest Team By the Bay

That honor now goes to Aldon Smith's 49ers.

This marks only the latest of a string of off-the-field legal issues for Smith.

The 49ers' team rap sheet keeps growing.

Remember when the Raiders were the baddest dudes in football? Who can forget Desmond Bryant's epic mug shot after his arrest for criminal mischief? Or linebacker Kaluka Maiava's bar fight in Hawaii? Or all those stories the epically-violent John Madden teams back in the '70s?

Well, it looks like something's gotten in the water down in Santa Clara, because the Niners are now poised to take the highly coveted title of thuggiest team in the Bay Area. What's your malfunction, guys?

First it was Chris Culliver with the classic charge of hit-and-run-with-brass-knuckles-in-the-car. (You may also remember Culliver for his infamous anti-gay comments before the 2013 Super Bowl). Then QB Colin Kaepernick went and got involved in some icky sounding shenanigans that have led to allegations of sexual misconduct.

Not to be out-done, 24-year-old star linebacker and all-around head case Aldon Smith got arrested at LAX airport yesterday after he allegedly told TSA officers that he had a bomb. That’s pretty dumb. Maybe he was just talking about his bong? Or maybe he was tipsy and trying to lighten the mood? Harmless fun that gets blown out of proportion and leads to felony charges—hey, it happens. It’s better than his previous allegations, which include possession of an assault weapon, drunk driving, and hosting a party that ends with gunshots and a couple of stab wounds. Hey, he's a rambunctious guy.

This is a rambunctiousness that we're used to seeing from the Silver and Black across the Bay. But how times have changed. According to one recent study, since 2000 Raiders have been in the middle of the pack in arrests per players (they have stats for everything!). And though the Niners were still below Oakland in that metric, the snapshot was taken before the latest bout of incidents.

We can only say this to the Red and Gold: If you want to get arrested like the '70s and '80s Raiders, you'd better win as many titles as the '70s and '80s Raiders.
