Your Weekend Guide to Drinking and Thinking on a Budget

Where to get cultured and a buzz too
It goes without saying: You’re a person of the world. When a new gallery previews at the MOMA or an off-Broadway revue rolls into town, you’re there on the first night nodding knowingly along to every erudite reference. But for that friend of yours who lacks such taste and sophistication — who might need a little liquid incentive to get off the couch and into a museum — here’s a weekend line-up of events where highbrow meets highball.
The event: If you feel like kicking off your Lost Weekend a little early, celebrate the third annual Cabernet Day with a master class and tasting starting.
Pairs well with: Hosted by Master Sommeliers Andrea Robinson and Catherine Fallis, this will be a variation on an all-Cab theme with offerings to taste (and taste again) from six different vineyards.
The time and place: 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Eventbrite headquarters
The price: Free
The event: You’ve already heard of NightLife—the once-a-week geek-out for grown-ups at the California Academy of Sciences. Tonight’s event, “Bacon Wrapped,” tests that age-old proposition that cured and fried pig meat really does make everything better.
Pairs well with: There will be the usual fare of stiff drinks. But for those with a strong stomach and a love of thematic consistency, grab a Bacon Martini, a Cochon Manhattan, or a bloody mary adaptation called a “Miss Piggy.”
The time and place: 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the CAS.
The price: $12 (non members)
The event: Bay Made gives Bay Area designers the opportunity to show off their upcycled wares and local musicians to get their message out. It also gives you the opportunity to stuff your face with free cocktails while prowling the cupcake bar.
Pairs well with: The cocktails provided will be T-WE-infused. Did we mention the cupcake bar?
The time and place: 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at 5th Stitch Collective
The price: Free
The event: As part of it’s Summer Nights series, the Oakland Museum of California will be playing an outdoor showing of Once Upon a Time in the West. Maybe Sergio Leone doesn’t meet your standard of “high-culture,” but the host is a real museum, so we think it counts.
Pairs well with: Whiskey, obviously. Sadly, it’s a cash bar, but what could be cooler than sipping on rye while watching Charles Bronson menace civilians with his harmonica?
The time and place: 8:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. at OMCA.
The price: $6
The event: If you’re in any condition to drive at this point, head to Hayward where you can listen to the blues and drown any you might have at the local area historical society’s Blues and Beer Festival.
Pairs well with: Local brews from Buffalo Bill’s, Speakeasy, and Trumer, among others.
The time and place: From 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at McConaghy House
Price: The music is free. Sadly, the beer isn’t.
