SMoCA takes you to San Francisco for Ai Weiwei

When: Through October 18, 2014
What:

Join the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art’s Associate Director, Curator, and Educator Sara Cochran, Ph.D., on an insider’s trip to San Francisco that includes special access to the highly anticipated installation on Alcatraz by Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei.

Ai is one of the most important and controversial artists alive today. His imprisonment by the Chinese Government in 2011 and the continuing ban on him travelling abroad makes this project on Alcatraz all the more poignant. Our group will be among the first to view the exhibition and will tour it with Cheryl Haines, who work directly with the artist to develop and produce this exciting exhibition.

Other highlights include:
Chara Schreyer has been named ARTnews’ list of the Top Ten Collectors in the world. We will visit her collection of major artists such as Sol Lewitt, Jeff Wall, Richard Serra, Andy Warhol, and Fred Sandback in her private home in Tiburon.

Renowned sculptor, Andy Goldsworthy, has created three site-specific installations spread out across the Presidio. In this beautiful setting, we will understand how he tries “to make connections between what we call nature and what we call man-made.”

Studio visits with artists Jim Campbell and David Maisel – two artists with international careers and important connections to our community.

We will enjoy wonderful meals, including dinner at the celebrated Kokkari Estiatorio and dim sum at local favorite Yank Sing. YUM!

October 18 - October 19, 2014 | $1,000 per person* | Location: San Francisco, CA
