Aston Martin soars with the stunning 2014 Vanquish Volante.
From the moment owners are handed their keys, it’s clear that Aston Martin’s 2014 Vanquish Volante offers a whole different caliber of driving experience. Forget toothy metal; the new supercar can only be started with what the company calls an Emotion Control Unit—an elegant, sparkling crystal fob trimmed with piano-black lacquer and shimmering stainless steel. In true Bond fashion, drivers slide the contraption into the dashboard to bring the Volante to life.
“Volante” means “flying” in Italian, and this is a vehicle that lives up to its name: With a 565-horsepower V-12 engine capable of rocketing it from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.0 seconds on the way to a top speed of 183 mph, the Volante doesn’t actually take flight, but it comes close. On the far more practical side, it’s as composed as it is powerful, handling turns with grace, thanks to an impressively balanced 51:49 front-to-rear weight distribution. And Aston Martin’s innovative new Adaptive Damping System, with settings ranging from Normal to Track, gives drivers even greater control. Mimicking its brethren on the race-car circuit, the 4,065-pound Volante relies on lightweight, long-lasting ceramic brakes to stop on a dime.
Impressive performance aside, the allure of an Aston Martin comes largely from its exterior design—and the Volante doesn’t disappoint. Purists will appreciate the nod to tradition in elongated headlamps, as well as the signature wide grille. Flush pop-out door handles help lend the Volante’s carbon fiber panel exterior even greater refinement—the car is drawn as one graceful, long line. Marrying form and function, rear LED light blades up safety in style, and a carbon fiber air diffuser with integrated exhaust outlets generates a satisfying growl.
Inside, the cabin is a dream, wrapped in exceptionally soft Luxmill leather. A 6.5-inch navigation system hides out of sight under a carbon fiber cover when not in use, and the luggage compartment is 50 percent larger than the Volante’s predecessor. The Volante is also a two-plus-two—which, aside from providing seats for a pair of extra passengers in a pinch, also brings down insurance rates. Sure, the back seats are a squeeze, but it’s a sacrifice most will happily make to experience this thrill ride.
