Legend has it that the mythical gardens were constructed by King Nebuchadnezzar II at the ancient city of Babylon for his homesick wife, Amytis of Media, who longed for the plants of her homeland. Said to have been destroyed by earthquakes in the 2nd Century BC and never to be seen again, the Atlanta Botanical Gardens has recreated the fabled paradise, featuring lush species of rare orchids like the Moth orchid and amber slipper orchid, cascading down the garden walls and floating overhead in a wondrous fantasy world.
