Destination Texas!

Lavande’s open-air events pavilion, which sits in a field of lavender.

Halfway between Houston and Austin, Lavande in Bellville, Texas, there’s more than an acre of beautifully blooming lavender—some of which is sold locally at Urban Harvest Farmers Market. It may not be quintessential Texas agriculture, but after a trip to Provence in 2006, it was the belief that the Lone Star State can rival any place in the world that inspired Craig and Dana Stewart to transform their hay meadow into a lush field of purple in 2007. Meeting the challenge with sweat equity to build, irrigate and grow thousands of plants, the Stewarts’ farm is a haven for weekend visitors and wedding parties alike. “We have customers coming from Houston, Austin and San Antonio on Saturdays to enjoy the lavender,” says Craig, who also grows olive trees and produces lavender soy candles and linen sprays. “A Lavande wedding is where the heart and soul unite.” With a covered pavilion able to accommodate 60 at the heart of the property and total capacity for 150, it’s an idyllic—and fragrant—place to tie the knot or host a bridesmaids’ brunch. Wired for sound, the open-air venue needs no decorating. For this slice of France in Texas, the owners require special-event reservations at least two months in advance.
