Subhead:
Mezcal may be having a moment, but that doesn’t mean its closest relative is laying low. Here are five tequilas to refresh your memory of how great the agave-based spirit can be with nary a salt shaker
or lime wedge in sight.
Casa Noble Single-Barrel Extra Añejo
Body 1:

1. Wansas Añejo
Honoring long-held traditions—the bottle’s shape references Mexico’s pyramids—and embracing innovation are the hallmarks of the Chicago-based company behind Wansas and its three tequilas. The medium-to-full-body añejo is aged for 18 months in charred white-oak barrels producing flavors of caramel, vanilla and tobacco along with spicy aromas. $40, Whole Foods

Body 2:

2. Casa Noble Single-Barrel Extra Añejo
Casa Noble takes its tequila aging very seriously, offering one of the only programs through which each bottle comes from an individual aging barrel, lending one-of-a-kind taste to each and every one. That includes its extra añejo, which is aged for three years in French white oak. The end product is smooth and complex. $90, Binny’s

Body 3:

3. Herradura Reserva
2016 Reposado
Crafted by one of the only female master distillers in the tequila industry, this small-batch reposado has the added distinction of being aged for two months in vintage port casks from Portugal after its initial 11 months in American oak. The end result is a complex body and an extraordinary smooth taste, as well as a nose of dried fruit and ripe plums with hints of cinnamon and chocolate. It’s no wonder Herradura opted to reintroduce this Colección de la Casa reposado that was initially released in 2012. $90, Binny’s

Body 4:

4. Maestro Dobel Humito
No, it’s not your imagination. There are hints of smoke and fresh-cut mesquite wood in this tequila from an 11th-generation producer—and that’s the point. Designed to be savored slowly, the world’s first smoked silver tequila—its name means “little smoke” in Spanish—has top notes of honey and maple with fruity floral undertones. $50, Binny’s

Body 5:

5. Casamigos Añejo
Inspired by two friends’ mutual love for tequila, Casamigos has earned plenty of praise, including many awards and recognition beyond two of its high-profile founders, George Clooney and Rande Gerber. Of the brand’s three tequilas, we’re partial to the añejo, which is aged for 14 months in American oak barrels, producing soft caramel and vanilla notes with subtle hints of spice. $50, Andersonville Wine & Spirits
