Gateway for Cancer Research rolled out the yellow brick road and raised $3.5 million at its Cures Gala.
THE PARTY Inviting more than 800 guests to an enchanting evening fit for a storybook, Gateway for Cancer Research held its 26th annual Cures Gala, themed Gateway to Oz. Attendees were treated to a custom culinary experience from chef Markus Ford inspired by the fictional universe, including Emerald City forest greens with compressed pickled honeydew, edamame mousse and basil mint emulsion. THE PEOPLE Richard J Stephenson, founder and chairman of Cancer Treatment Centers of America, and Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson, CTCA chairman of functional medicine and member of the Gateway board of directors, presided over the elaborate evening. THE PINNACLE Following dinner, guests were treated to a star-studded entertainment lineup. Performers like Matteo Bocelli, son of Andrea Bocelli, American Idol finalist Pia Toscano and opera singer Laura Bretan charmed attendees. Then, the legendary Earth, Wind & Fire headlined the evening and gave a showstopping performance that would have even Toto barking. -Ally Zacek
