Porsche’s midengine sportster, the Cayman, gets the brand’s performance GTS treatment. The result: An aggressive trackworthy beast that can perform double-duty 
as a stylish everyday ride.

MIDENGINE MIGHT
The new Porsche Cayman GTS packs an optimized power wallop on the track and an aggressive visual appeal in everyday life.

It was in 1964 at the Targa Florio, a grueling open-road endurance race in the mountains of Sicily, that Porsche introduced the GTS moniker (short for Gran Turismo Sport). Two 904 Carrera GTS racers shocked the world, turning in a triumphant 1-2 finish. The GTS moniker was branded on the hearts of race fans that day, and now, over 50 years later, those three letters live on in Porsche’s new 2015 Cayman GTS, a high-performance version of Porsche’s thrilling midengine daily driver.

Smoked bi-xenon headlights offer a menacing face up front, emphasized by the GTS’ unique fascia, which includes large blacked-out air intakes with LED daytime running lights. On the side view, the GTS gets 20-inch Carrera S wheels, and in back, dark-tinted LED taillights, a retractable rear spoiler and twin black tailpipes complete the look.

The GTS treatment goes well beyond aggressive visual cues and into the engine compartment. It’s there, in the center of the Cayman, where Porsche engineers squeezed out 15 extra ponies from the car’s 3.4-liter six-cylinder boxer engine. Total power output rises to 340 horsepower, and torque also increases by 7 lb.-ft. to 280. Purists will love the Cayman GTS’ six-speed manual transmission with its rev-matching technology. If, however, you opt for Porsche’s PDK double-clutch automatic transmission, then 0 to 60 mph takes just 4.3 seconds.

With its midengine setup and superlightweight body, the Cayman GTS is extremely forgiving on the racetrack, making even novice drivers feel confident behind the wheel. In this vehicle, even a mundane freeway offramp becomes a spirited element of your daily routine.

Surprisingly, the Cayman GTS is quite capable as an everyday driver. In fact, the Cayman has more luggage space between its front and rear cargo areas than a larger 911. Inside, sporty Alcantara, a suede-like material, wraps the steering wheel, headliner and center console. Serious audiophiles will also appreciate the car’s optional 12-speaker Burmester surround-sound system.
