Top-Down Off-Roader

The sky’s the limit when it comes to adventurous driving this summer, as long as you’re behind the wheel of a 2017 Range Rover Evoque, the world’s first luxury SUV convertible.

The unique Range Rover Evoque convertible skillfully combines rugged off-road capability with open-air fun.

Whether fording a stream or shuttling royalty to a charity gala, Range Rovers are known across the globe for both their exceptional off-road capabilities and luxurious interiors. Now, Range Rover hopes people will also start thinking drop-top fun when the iconic British brand comes to mind. The 2017 Range Rover Evoque is the first-ever luxury SUV convertible, and it’s not only just as capable off-road as any other Land Rover; it’s also just as thrilling to drive as any other convertible—maybe even more so.

The sight of something like a convertible SUV causes most to crane their necks and do a double take. In the case of the Evoque, that confusion is quickly followed by a hearty thumbs-up. From the side, frameless doors and a rising beltline help to define the convertible’s clean top-down appearance. When Mother Nature acts up, simply press a button to close the roof and a dazzling 21-second mechanical dance ensues, an impressive feat considering it can be done while traveling at speeds of up to 30 mph. With the roof up, the Evoque’s hushed cabin can be attributed to a five-layer top that features a special acoustic lining to reduce road noise.

Recognizing that its owners enjoy exploring remote and often treacherous terrain, Range Rover engineered an impressive array of safety features for the Evoque. A seat airbag system combines both thorax and head airbags to offer the same side protection as the hardtop Evoque, while a strengthened windscreen and deployable aluminum bars protect occupants in the event of a rollover. For the more pedestrian demands of a daily commute, the car features Lane Keeping Assist to prevent drifting and a smart cruise-control system that makes stop-and-go traffic more bearable.

On the road, the Evoque’s 240-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder provides enough power to zip happily through traffic, launching from 0 to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds. A nine-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly and helps the Evoque achieve 28 mpg on the highway. When it’s time to head off-road, however, the Evoque convertible rises to the occasion with Range Rover’s confidence-inspiring terrain response system, which makes off-roading as easy as selecting the type of surface to be traversed, from sand or snow to mud or ruts. Now that the Evoque can take you places you never dreamed of exploring, you soon will—wind whipping through your hair. Experience the 2017 Range Rover Evoque at Land Rover dealers this July.
