Grammy-nominated guitarist, singer and composer Makana (whose name means “a gift given freely”), will join the Hawai‘i Symphony Orchestra on Valentine’s weekend for a passionate performance of love songs from around the world, intertwined with inspired anecdotes about the songs and the storied history of Valentine’s Day.
Born and raised in Hawai‘i, Makana’s wide-ranging musical style has led him to tour with Santana, Sting and Jason Mraz, performing in venues ranging from Chinese and European opera houses to the White House. He is the last protégé of Hawaiian slack key guitar master Sonny Chillingworth, and was recently featured on the cover of Frets magazine, the acoustic companion to the world’s most popular guitar publication, Guitar Player. Makana is considered “the greatest living player” of Hawaiian slack key guitar (Esquire Magazine, 2003) whose “instrumental brilliance bears comparison with the work of such groundbreaking acoustic guitarists as John Fahey and Michael Hedges” (Maui News).
Makana’s evening with the HSO will include both vocal and slack key guitar pieces with timeless material sourced from and original material inspired by the romance of Italy, India, the Americas and Hawai‘i.
