Local residential designers strike it rich at the Gold Nugget Awards.

Home of the Year: The Sullivan at Adero Canyon

Builder: Toll Brothers
Architect: Robert Tyler
Planner: Creative Environments
Interior Design: Est Est Inc

Showcasing a midcentury-modern design with a distinctive butterfly roof, The Sullivan utilizes an open-layout plan to maximize surrounding desert views. Judges praised this Fountain Hills home for its upside-down concept, which places the main living quarters upstairs for views. They also liked the home’s thoughtful execution and innovative floor plan that takes full advantage of outdoor living spaces, including a creatively designed alfresco dining room and stylish pool area.

Best Custom Home (4,000 to 8,000 Square Feet): Saguaro Ridge

Builder: Hosco Inc.
Developer: Dennis and Sharon Orem
Architect: Douglas W. Fredrikson, AIA, Douglas Fredrikson Architects, Inc.
Interior Design: Rose Capestany

This spectacular Scottsdale home appears to float above the pool, while intricate metal shade panels create an indoor-outdoor year-round retreat. Private courtyards accompany each room, and the multilevel design affords space for a series of balconies. The most striking feature, though, is a majestic saguaro cactus jutting up through the center of the home.

Best Single Family Detached (3,000 to 3,499 Square Feet): The Parker at Adero Canyon

Builder: Toll Brothers
Architect: Robert Tyler
Planner: Creative Environments
Interior Design: Ryan Young Interiors

Located in Fountain Hills, The Parker earned accolades for the flexible and elegant design that complements the desert backdrop, particularly the expansive windows, stacked sliding glass doors and interior courtyards that allow for natural light. In addition to the Grand Awards, PCBC gave Merit Awards to several other developers and designers for their noteworthy work on local properties. Dancing Light in Paradise Valley (built by Desert Star Construction, architect Kendle Design Collaborative and interior design by David Michael Miller Associates) utilizes clean lines and natural materials for a stunning take on midcentury modern. And Bocce Man House in Scottsdale (built by Salcito Custom Homes, architect PHX Architecture, planner Berghoff Design Group and interior design by Janet Brooks) showcases indoor-outdoor entertaining spaces in delightful ways. Both homes earned Merit Awards for best custom home (4,000 to 8,000 square feet).

It’s no secret that the Scottsdale area is renowned for its outstanding architecture. Luxury homes representing the latest in design and standing as architectural marvels dot the landscape. So when local architects, interior designers and developers earned top accolades at this year’s 54th annual PCBC Gold Nugget Awards, we were honored—albeit, not surprised. Founded in 1959 as a trade show celebrating the movers and shakers in innovative design, the Pacific Coast Builders Conference has grown into a multiday event that draws attendees from all over the world. Now known simply as PCBC, the organization recognizes the achievements of West Coast architects, designers and developers. Out of more than 600 entries, these local builders and designers took home Grand Awards, the highest-rated award in each category.
