5 Napkin Burger

Bun to Bun

by Kelly Skinner | Jezebel magazine | October 12, 2011

The burger boom has set the bar high for Atlanta’s carnivorous crowd. The latest crop to pop up illustrates that point—albeit in contrasting ways. Here, two new burger concepts face off.

Farm Burger

The Once-Over
A handsome mix of woods and minimal décor lends to a rustic, yet chic environment perfect for a working lunch, quick stop after shopping or casual dinner. It’s modish, yet comfortable and is often packed with Buckhead business types; predominantly ravenous males in suits.

Besides the Beef
Standouts (besides the decadent build-your-own burgers and the pork belly accoutrements) include the lightly crispy sweet potato fries cooked “just so,” the fried green tomatoes with pimento cheese and the ever-changing market salad that varies according to what’s in season.

Down the Hatch
Imbibe comfort drinks like the bacon brittle shake (vanilla ice cream, caramel sauce, bacon peanut brittle) or “adult” floats, like the one with Wells Banana Bread Beer. Besides sodas and iced teas, sip on a healthy selection of craft beers and a few whites and reds.

5 Napkin Burger

The Once-Over
This spot exudes hipster charm with its nod to old-school glam (black-and-white checkered floors recall the ’50s) juxtaposed with a sleek bar and counters that gleam. The outside porch and its placement across from Blake’s demand that this become the new go-to for the Midtown set.

Besides the Beef
If you eat meat, get the 5 Napkin Burger at least once (rosemary aioli is heaven!). Otherwise, shock yourself by ordering some of the best sushi in the city. Seriously, this stuff is good. But so are the deep-fried pickles and pastrami with sauerkraut and mustard oil. Also, there’s brunch.

Down the Hatch
Have a thirst for bourbon? So does 5 Napkin. Choose from more than 40 bourbons at the stunning bar, drink local brews, or opt for one of the Georgia-specific cocktails like the spicy watermelon cooler.
