Men dance on a float at the 19th annual Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade. The first permitted gay parade in the world took place in Hollywood on June 28, 1970, where approximately 2,000 people gathered on McCadden Place, marched north to Hollywood Blvd. and proceeded east towards Vine Street. The inaugural event took place to honor the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots—when drag queens and LGBTQ+ community members stood up to police in New York City—sparking a movement that continues to grow. Today, Pride has evolved into one of the nation’s largest and most powerful celebrations of identity, resistance and joy.
